6 Jun 2008 - Day 5
A long transitional stage awaited the team when they woke up on Day 5. An early start to the morning on the Medway Briges with a few of the M2 and the Eurostar. This stage had some nasty surprises in store for the walkers.
The first was a steep climb that lasted a mile and kept going up and up. The weather was behaving itself but a lot of tough terrain was to follow.
The walkers got a bit of a surprise when they arrived in Detling for their lunch break. Kate and Heather were nowhere to be found. They then found out that the two girls from the support team had started walking the final stage of the day. The girls had an hour head start ahead of the lads, tackling a tough couple of miles with 5 steep climbs and descents and countless steps to clim up and down. A dog joined Heather and Kate, eventually leaving them 3 miles later when they reached Hollingbourne. On the way towards the finish, everyone met Phil the Bronze Pilgrim and had their photo taken. The lads had a tough first couple of miles and were determined that they would catch up with the girls and overtake them at the finish point for the day. This wasn't to be. The girls arrived at Lenham, the day's finish point, 20 minutes ahead of the lads. Girl Power came through in Footprints own Battle of The Sexes.
The team made their way to Ashford, their overnight stay for the evening where they were surprised to find a number of eateries to choose from. They had an enjoyable meal at Pizza Hut after a tough day which everybody felt the effects of.
