3 Jun 2008 - Day 2
Day 2 was one of those day when you get up, look out the window and immediately wish you hadn't! It was raining!
It had rained all through the night leaving the ground not at its best but the walkers were not down hearted and the walk goes on.
After the support team fought their way through Guildford traffic during rush hour, the first stage of the day started at 9am. They realised there were only 14 miles to walk that day due to the surplus of 4 being walked the previous day. Ahead of them was at least one testing steap climb - Boxhill.
The first few miles were completed at a steady pace and the walkers walked down a valley passing the famous Denbies Vineyards. They then arrived at the bottom of the worldly known landmark Box Hill and were met with a disappointment. The team had hoped that they would be crossing the river via the famous stepping stones but sadly used a bridge crossing instead. The climb then commenced up a counteless number of steps, although the resting points provided some magnificent views of the countryside which made it all the more worthwhile. A mishap was insight, however. The route which thus far had been mapped out accurately came to a T-junction and the signs were nowhere in sight. The group made an educated decision by looking at their maps but it turned out to be the wrong way. The group then found themselves a mile off course but eventually found themselves back on track. The walkers stopped off in the quaint village of Betchworth for a well earned lunch with the support team.
One of the walkers struggled through the day but working together ensured that nobody was left behind. The next stage provided some beautiful views of the South Downs, the weald and Gatwick. The team eased their way into Merstham after a short tea-break on Reigate Hill. The group had had a long day and felt slight relief that the day had come to an end. They went finished the day at Merstham on the very aptly named QUALITY STREET arriving there at about 4.00PM.
The evening meal was taken at The White Hart Beefeater Public House in Godstone, the team had a certain amount of discount vouchers but when the Manager realised what the team were doing he gave the rest of the meal for free.
The team would like to thank him for this very generous gesture and would also recommend this Public House to anyone who visits there.
